Description

What Is Geogard ECT?

Geogard ECT is a broad-spectrum, ECOCERT and COSMOS-approved liquid preservative blend designed specifically for natural and organic cosmetic formulations. It combines four active components — Benzyl Alcohol, Salicylic Acid, Glycerin, and Sorbic Acid — to deliver effective antimicrobial protection against bacteria, yeast, and mould, without relying on parabens, formaldehyde donors, or isothiazolinones.

If you’re new to formulating, here’s what you need to know: every formula that contains water needs a preservative — full stop. Water is a breeding ground for microbial contamination that can make your products unsafe and unstable. Geogard ECT is one of the cleanest, most widely accepted options available, making it a go-to for natural skincare, hair care, and body care makers who want certified-compliant preservation without compromising their formula’s integrity.

For experienced formulators: Geogard ECT is an ECOCERT-listed multifunctional preservative with activity across bacteria, yeast, and mould. Its efficacy is pH-dependent and peaks at 3.0–5.5, making it particularly well-suited for AHA serums, toners, hair rinses, and other low-pH aqueous systems. It’s added in the cool-down phase below 40°C to preserve its antimicrobial components — especially Sorbic Acid, which is heat-sensitive.

Key Benefits

  • Broad-spectrum protection — effective against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, yeast, and mould
  • ECOCERT & COSMOS approved — fully compliant for certified natural and organic product lines
  • Paraben-free, formaldehyde-free, isothiazolinone-free — clean label and well-tolerated
  • Suitable for sensitive skin formulations — no harsh preservative actives
  • Effective at low use levels — 0.5–1.5% covers most aqueous formulas
  • Liquid format — easy to incorporate; no heating or dissolving required

Applications

Geogard ECT performs best in water-containing, low-to-moderate pH formulations. Ideal for:

  • Facial serums and essences (especially AHA/BHA formulations at pH 3.0–5.5)
  • Toners and mists
  • Lightweight moisturizers and emulsions
  • Shampoos, conditioners, and hair rinses
  • Body washes and cleansers
  • Eye creams and gels
  • Natural and organic certified product lines

Note: Not recommended for high-pH formulations (above pH 5.5) or anhydrous (water-free) formulas where microbial growth is not a concern.

How to Formulate With Geogard ECT

Beginner tip: Add Geogard ECT after your formula has cooled below 40°C. It’s a liquid, so it blends in easily — just stir it into your water phase or finished emulsion during cool-down. Always check your final formula’s pH: Geogard ECT needs a pH of 3.0–5.5 to work properly. Use a pH meter or strips to confirm before packaging.

Expert notes:

  • Phase & timing: Add in the cool-down phase, below 40°C. Sorbic Acid is heat-volatile — adding at high temperatures will reduce preservative efficacy.
  • pH is critical: Geogard ECT is most effective between pH 3.0–5.5. Above pH 5.5, efficacy drops significantly. Always pH-adjust before adding your preservative, or adjust after and re-test.
  • Usage rate: 0.5–1.0% for most aqueous formulas; up to 1.5% for high-water-activity formulas or those with botanical extracts that may introduce contamination risk.
  • Challenge testing: Always conduct a Preservative Efficacy Test (PET / Challenge Test) on finished formulations before commercial launch. Passing a challenge test is the only way to confirm your preservation system is adequate.
  • Pairing for boosted efficacy: Combine with 1,2-Hexanediol or Pentylene Glycol as multifunctional humectant-boosters that enhance preservation and reduce your total preservative load.

Pairings — Build a Better Formula

Geogard ECT is the last thing you add — but the actives below are what your formula is built around. All are store-verified and formulation-safe:

  • 1,2-Hexanediol — multifunctional humectant with antimicrobial-boosting properties; reduces total preservative load when used alongside Geogard ECT
  • Pentylene Glycol — another preservation-boosting humectant; pairs well in toners, essences, and lightweight serums
  • Sodium Hyaluronate Powder — key hydration active in any water-based serum or moisturizer that Geogard ECT will preserve
  • Niacinamide Vitamin B3 Powder — brightening + barrier active; compatible with Geogard ECT in pH 4.0–5.5 formulas
  • Allantoin Powder — soothing, skin-conditioning active; ideal in sensitive skin formulations using this natural preservative
  • DL-Panthenol Powder (Provitamin B5) — conditioning humectant for hair and skin formulas; fully compatible
  • Sorbic Acid Powder — if you need to boost preservation at the sorbic acid component level, our standalone Sorbic Acid can be used as an adjunct

Suggested Formula — Natural Brightening Toner

A lightweight, ECOCERT-compliant toner combining brightening, humectant, and soothing actives — preserved with Geogard ECT.

Ingredient % Phase
Distilled Water q.s. to 100% A – Water
Sodium Hyaluronate Powder 0.1% A – Water
Niacinamide Powder 5.0% A – Water
Allantoin Powder 0.5% A – Water
DL-Panthenol Powder 1.0% A – Water
1,2-Hexanediol 1.0% B – Cool Down
Geogard ECT Preservative 1.0% B – Cool Down

Method: Dissolve all Phase A ingredients in water at room temperature, stirring until fully clear. Cool to below 40°C, then add Phase B. Adjust pH to 4.5–5.0 using a dilute citric acid or sodium hydroxide solution. Bottle in a pump or spray format.

Target pH: 4.5–5.0 | Recommended use: Apply to cleansed skin morning and/or evening before serums and moisturizer.

Storage & Shelf Life

  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat
  • Keep container tightly sealed — exposure to air can affect Sorbic Acid stability
  • Shelf life: 24 months unopened when stored correctly
  • Once incorporated into a formula, always conduct challenge testing to confirm preservation efficacy and shelf life

Important Formulation Note

Geogard ECT is a tool, not a guarantee. Always conduct a Preservative Efficacy Test (PET) on your finished formula before commercial launch. No preservative system can be assumed adequate without challenge testing — especially in formulas containing high levels of botanical extracts, clays, or other contamination-risk ingredients.

Safety & Handling

  • For cosmetic/external use only — not for internal consumption
  • Avoid contact with eyes; rinse thoroughly with water if contact occurs
  • Always conduct a patch test in your finished formulation before use
  • Benzyl Alcohol is a known sensitizer at high concentrations — keep within recommended usage rates
  • Keep out of reach of children
  • Refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for full handling and disposal information

Suggested Usage & Formulation

Suggested Use & Storage

Add to the water phase of your formulation at 0.5–1.5%, below 40°C. Ensure formulation pH is within the effective range of 3.0–5.5 for optimal preservation efficacy. Always perform challenge testing (PET) on finished formulations to confirm adequate preservation. Suitable for lotions, creams, serums, toners, shampoos, conditioners, and other aqueous personal care products requiring natural-compatible preservation.

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep container tightly sealed when not in use. MFG: JUL 2026 | EXP: JUL 2028
