Description

What Is Horsetail Extract Powder?

Horsetail Extract Powder (Equisetum arvense) is a water-dispersible cosmetic-grade botanical powder delivering the concentrated phytochemical complex of Equisetum arvense aerial parts — including Orthosilicic Acid (OSA), Kaempferol, Quercetin, and Equisetonin — in a fine dispersible powder format for incorporation into the water phase of hair-strengthening treatments, collagen-support anti-aging serums, nail-firming formulations, and scalp-strengthening products. INCI: Equisetum Arvense Extract. CAS: 84082-64-0.

For those new to botanical actives, Horsetail (Equisetum arvense) is the most silica-dense vascular plant on earth — its aerial stems contain up to 25% silicon dioxide (SiO₂) by dry weight, making it the unrivalled plant-kingdom source of bioavailable silica for cosmetic formulation. Equisetum is also one of the most ancient plants in human botanical history — it is a living fossil, a pteridophyte whose ancestors dominated the Carboniferous forests 350 million years ago, essentially unchanged since the era of the coal swamps. In European herbal traditions, Horsetail decoctions have been used since at least Roman times (Pliny the Elder, Naturalis Historia, 77 CE) for wound healing, bleeding, and strengthening hair and nails — a use validated by modern understanding of silica’s role in connective tissue formation. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) uses Mu Zei (Equisetum hyemale, the close botanical relative) as a primary herb for improving hair quality and skin tone. In early 20th century European cosmetology, Horsetail was the standard botanical additive to hair rinses and scalp tonics specifically for its hair-strengthening silica content — establishing the commercial hair-strengthening tradition that continues in premium hair care today.

At the expert level, Horsetail’s most pharmacologically significant compound is Orthosilicic Acid (OSA, Si(OH)₄, monosilicic acid) — the bioavailable monomer form of silicon found at high concentration in Equisetum arvense extract. OSA operates as an essential cofactor for prolyl hydroxylase (specifically PHD — prolyl 4-hydroxylase domain enzymes) — the enzyme responsible for the post-translational hydroxylation of proline residues to 4-hydroxyproline in collagen alpha-chains. Hydroxyproline is the structural cornerstone of the collagen triple helix: without adequate prolyl hydroxylation, collagen chains cannot form the thermodynamically stable triple-helix configuration, and the resulting underhydroxylated collagen is rapidly targeted for intracellular proteasomal degradation before secretion. This makes OSA not a “collagen stimulator” in the conventional TGF-β/Smad sense, but a structural collagen prerequisite — silica availability is a rate-limiting factor in the enzymatic machinery of collagen triple-helix assembly. For hair and nail biology, OSA deposits at the silicate mineral film level on the hair cuticle and nail plate surface, creating a mineral reinforcement layer that increases cuticle hardness, reduces friction-mediated mechanical breakage, and improves refractive index for enhanced shine — the botanical equivalent of silicone-free cuticle silicate strengthening. Kaempferol and Quercetin — the primary flavonoid antioxidants in Horsetail — add complementary NF-κB/AP-1 anti-inflammatory and ROS-scavenging activity that protects prolyl hydroxylase itself from oxidative inactivation (PHD enzymes are Fe²⁺-dependent and particularly susceptible to oxidative degradation). Equisetonin (the primary saponin) contributes mild surface-active and anti-inflammatory activity at the scalp and hair follicle level.

Key Benefits

  • Orthosilicic Acid Prolyl Hydroxylase Cofactor — OSA is a rate-limiting cofactor for prolyl 4-hydroxylase, the enzyme that hydroxylates proline to hydroxyproline in collagen alpha-chains; without adequate OSA, collagen triple-helix assembly is impaired — making Horsetail a structural collagen prerequisite rather than a conventional TGF-β/Smad collagen stimulator
  • Hair Cuticle Silicate Mineral Film — Silicic acid deposits on the hair cuticle surface forming a mineral reinforcement layer that increases cuticle hardness, reduces friction-mediated mechanical breakage, and improves refractive light scattering for enhanced shine; the botanical silicone-free cuticle-strengthening mechanism
  • Nail Plate Silicate Hardening — OSA silicate film on the nail plate surface reinforces keratin matrix structure, reduces nail brittleness and splitting, and improves nail surface hardness — the primary cosmetic active for botanical nail-strengthening formulations
  • Kaempferol & Quercetin PHD Antioxidant Protection — Flavonoid ROS scavenging protects Fe²⁺-dependent prolyl hydroxylase from oxidative inactivation; preserves collagen assembly enzyme activity under conditions of oxidative stress — the most important cofactor interaction for collagen-support anti-aging formulations
  • Highest Plant-Kingdom OSA Source — Equisetum arvense aerial parts contain up to 25% SiO₂ by dry weight — exceeding bamboo, oat straw, nettle, and all commercially available plant silica sources; no plant-derived ingredient delivers more bioavailable silicic acid per gram of extract
  • Multi-Target Hair, Nail & Skin Structural Support — A single extract delivering OSA (cuticle/nail silicate + collagen prolyl hydroxylase) + kaempferol/quercetin (antioxidant PHD protection) + equisetonin (saponin anti-inflammatory) covering structural, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory dimensions of hair, nail, and skin health simultaneously

Applications

  • Hair-strengthening and anti-breakage shampoos, conditioners, and leave-in treatments
  • Scalp serums for hair thinning and structural scalp health
  • Nail-strengthening and brittleness-repair nail treatments and serums
  • Collagen-support anti-aging face serums and moisturizers
  • Skin-firming formulations targeting ECM structural integrity
  • Multi-botanical hair and scalp stacks combining silicate + DHT-inhibiting + growth-stimulating actives

How to Formulate With Horsetail Extract Powder

Beginner tip: Pre-disperse in a small volume of warm water (≤50°C) before adding to your main batch. Start at 2–3% in a hair-strengthening conditioner or scalp serum. “Horsetail” and “silica” are both highly consumer-recognisable hair care claims — the silica-hair strength connection has massive consumer awareness from the supplement market, translating directly to topical product credibility. Horsetail is the only botanical that delivers the specific “silica for hair strength” claim with the highest plant-kingdom silica concentration — a uniquely premium and defensible positioning in the hair strengthening category.

Expert notes:

  • Dispersibility: Pre-disperse in warm water (≤50°C); stir to achieve homogeneous dispersion before adding to the main batch
  • Usage Rate: 1–5%; 1–2% for skin anti-aging serums; 2–3% for scalp serums and leave-in hair treatments; 3–5% for rinse-off shampoos and conditioners where dilution reduces in-use concentration
  • pH: Work at pH 4.5–7.0; silicic acid is most stable in mildly acidic to neutral pH; avoid strongly alkaline pH (>8.0) which promotes silicate polymerisation; confirm via TDS
  • Silicate film synergy: Horsetail OSA silicate cuticle deposition is enhanced by low-pH formulation (≤5.5) and conditioning film-forming co-actives; pair with D-Panthenol for cortex penetration + cuticle surface OSA hardening
  • The definitive structural hair stack: Horsetail Powder (OSA prolyl hydroxylase cofactor + silicate cuticle mineral film) + Rosemary Brown (carnosic acid KGF follicle stimulation + 5α-reductase) + Saw Palmetto Powder (dual 5α-reductase + β-sitosterol AR binding) + Burdock Root Powder (arctiin DHT lignan) = the most complete structural + anti-androgenic + growth-stimulating scalp serum — collagen/cuticle structural integrity + DHT blockade (three mechanisms) + KGF follicle stimulation in a single formulation
  • Collagen anti-aging serum: Horsetail Powder (OSA prolyl hydroxylase cofactor for collagen triple-helix) + Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (stable Vitamin C PHD Fe²⁺ cofactor + direct collagen gene transcription) + Rosehip Powder (natural retinoid precursors + carotenoid antioxidant) = the three-pathway collagen support stack — structural prerequisite (OSA) + transcriptional activator (MAP) + oxidative protection (rosehip) — addressing three distinct levels of the collagen synthesis and maintenance cascade
  • Nail treatment stack: Horsetail Powder (OSA silicate nail plate hardening + prolyl hydroxylase collagen matrix support) + Allantoin (nail plate desquamation normalisation + keratolytic softening of nail margins) = the dual-mechanism nail serum covering silicate mineral hardening + keratin matrix repair
  • Preservation: Always include a broad-spectrum preservative — we recommend Geogard ECT at 0.5–1.0%

Pairings — Build a Better Formula

  • Rosemary Brown Liquid Extract — Carnosic acid KGF dermal papilla stimulation + 5α-reductase/MMP inhibition; the most commercially recognised hair growth pairing — Horsetail OSA cuticle structural strengthening + Rosemary KGF follicle growth stimulation = the definitive structural + growth dual-botanical hair treatment
  • Saw Palmetto Extract Powder — Lauric acid dual 5α-reductase Type I+II + β-sitosterol AR competitive binding; the clinically validated anti-androgenic pairing — Horsetail structural cuticle/collagen (OSA) + Saw Palmetto DHT/AR anti-androgenic blockade = hair structural support + androgen pathway protection in a unified scalp serum
  • Burdock Root Extract Powder — Arctiin lignan 5α-reductase/DHT inhibitor in matching powder format; the powder-format DHT inhibitor that stacks with Horsetail Powder and Saw Palmetto Powder in a unified powder anti-androgenic and structural hair serum
  • Moringa Brown Liquid Extract — Kaempferol IGF-1 anagen stimulation + isothiocyanate Nrf2/HO-1 scalp cytoprotection; extends Horsetail’s structural OSA activity with pro-growth anagen stimulation and scalp oxidative stress protection — OSA cuticle strength + IGF-1 anagen induction in a single serum
  • Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (MAP) — Stable Vitamin C derivative; PHD enzyme Fe²⁺ cofactor and direct collagen gene transcriptional activator; the most mechanistically synergistic collagen pairing for anti-aging — Horsetail OSA (prolyl hydroxylase structural cofactor) + MAP (PHD Fe²⁺ cofactor + collagen gene transcription) = two-level collagen synthesis support covering the enzyme cofactor and genomic transcription levels simultaneously
  • Rosehip Extract Powder — Natural retinoid precursors (trans-retinoic acid, β-carotene) + vitamin C + carotenoid antioxidant; the anti-aging oxidative protection complement to Horsetail’s OSA prolyl hydroxylase collagen support — protecting collagen synthesis enzymes from ROS while simultaneously activating retinoid receptor-mediated collagen gene expression

Suggested Formula
