Description

What Is Rosemary Clear Liquid Extract?

Rosemary Clear Liquid Extract (Rosmarinus officinalis, now also classified as Salvia rosmarinus) is a water-soluble botanical active derived from the leaves of the rosemary plant, delivering the key phytochemical profile of this Mediterranean herb in a clear, ready-to-use liquid format. The extract is standardised to contain the principal bioactive compounds of rosemary — Rosmarinic Acid, Carnosic Acid, Carnosol, and Ursolic Acid — and is designed for direct water-phase incorporation into serums, toners, scalp treatments, moisturizers, and multi-functional formulations. INCI: Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract.

For those new to botanical actives, rosemary is one of the most multi-functional plant extracts in cosmetic formulation. It works on several fronts simultaneously: protecting skin from oxidative stress, calming inflammation and redness, regulating oily and acne-prone skin, and — particularly notable — stimulating scalp circulation to support hair growth. It’s been used in skincare for centuries and now has meaningful clinical and in vitro science to back it up, making it one of the most reliable and versatile botanicals for both skin and hair formulations.

At the expert level, rosemary’s key actives operate through distinct mechanisms. Rosmarinic Acid is a potent phenylpropanoid antioxidant and tyrosinase inhibitor, contributing to both free radical scavenging and melanin suppression. Carnosic Acid and Carnosol are diterpene phenolic antioxidants that activate the Nrf2 pathway, upregulating the skin’s endogenous antioxidant enzyme defence system (SOD, catalase, GPx). Ursolic Acid is a pentacyclic triterpenoid with anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and collagen-stimulating properties. For scalp applications, rosemary extract has been studied in head-to-head clinical trials against 2% minoxidil, with comparable hair count outcomes at 6 months — making it a highly compelling active for hair growth formulations.

Key Benefits

  • Potent Polyphenol Antioxidant — Rosmarinic acid, carnosic acid, and carnosol scavenge free radicals and activate Nrf2 to upregulate endogenous antioxidant enzyme defence
  • Scalp Stimulation & Hair Growth — Clinically studied for promoting hair growth and improving scalp microcirculation; comparable results to 2% minoxidil in peer-reviewed studies
  • Anti-Inflammatory & Soothing — Inhibits pro-inflammatory cytokine cascades; calms redness, irritation, and sensitivity in reactive and acne-prone skin
  • Brightening & Tyrosinase Inhibition — Rosmarinic acid suppresses melanogenesis for a more even, radiant complexion
  • Antimicrobial — Broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity supports preservation and helps address acne-causing bacteria (C. acnes)
  • Sebum Balancing — Ursolic acid helps regulate excess sebum production; ideal for oily, combination, and blemish-prone skin

Applications

  • Scalp serums and hair growth treatments
  • Anti-dandruff and scalp-balancing formulations
  • Antioxidant face serums and toners
  • Brightening and tone-evening moisturizers
  • Oily, acne-prone, and combination skin formulations
  • Multi-active botanical blends for skin and hair

💡 Clear vs. Brown: We offer two rosemary extract formats — this Clear Liquid Extract is ideal for transparent formulations (toners, gel serums, clear hair treatments) where colour is important. The Rosemary Brown Liquid Extract offers a more concentrated botanical profile for opaque creams and formulations where colour is not a constraint.

How to Formulate With Rosemary Clear Liquid Extract

Beginner tip: Add directly to your water phase at 2–3% — no pre-processing needed. It blends seamlessly into toners, serums, and shampoos. For a simple and effective scalp serum, combine with Niacinamide, Panthenol, and Hyaluronic Acid LMW at cool-down. The clear format means your finished product stays beautifully transparent.

Expert notes:

  • Phase: Water phase or cool-down (≤40°C); heat-sensitive phytochemicals (rosmarinic acid, carnosic acid) are best preserved at lower processing temperatures
  • Usage Rate: 1–10%; 2–5% is the standard effective range for leave-on serums and moisturizers; up to 10% in rinse-off scalp treatments
  • Synergies: Excellent with Niacinamide (sebum regulation + barrier amplification), D-Panthenol (scalp and hair conditioning), Beta Glucan (anti-inflammatory amplification), Burdock Root Extract (scalp detox + DHT-inhibiting synergy for hair growth), and Green Tea Extract (polyphenol antioxidant stacking)
  • pH: Work within a compatible pH range for botanical extracts — check your CoA/TDS for confirmed values
  • Stability: Add at cool-down to preserve heat-sensitive actives; avoid prolonged exposure to high temperatures
  • Preservation: Always include a broad-spectrum preservative in aqueous formulas — we recommend Geogard ECT at 0.5–1.0%

Pairings — Build a Better Formula

Suggested Formula

A lightweight scalp serum combining Rosemary’s clinically studied hair growth activity with Burdock Root, Niacinamide, and Panthenol for a comprehensive scalp-balancing and follicle-stimulating treatment.

Ingredient % Phase
Distilled Water q.s. to 100% A
Hyaluronic Acid Powder LMW 0.3% A
Niacinamide Vitamin B3 Powder 3.0% A
Rosemary Clear Liquid Extract 4.0% B (cool-down, ≤40°C)
Burdock Root Brown Liquid Extract 3.0% B (cool-down)
Green Tea Clear Liquid Extract 3.0% B (cool-down)
D-Panthenol Liquid 100% 2.0% B (cool-down)
Geogard ECT 0.8% B (cool-down)

Method: Combine Phase A — hydrate hyaluronic acid LMW in warm distilled water (≤40°C) and dissolve niacinamide. Cool batch to ≤40°C. At cool-down, add all Phase B ingredients — rosemary extract, burdock extract, green tea extract, panthenol, and Geogard ECT — with gentle stirring. Check pH and adjust to 4.5–5.5. Fill into dropper bottle or pump applicator.

Target pH: 4.5–5.5
Recommended use: Apply to clean, dry scalp using dropper or pump. Massage in gently and leave on — do not rinse. Use daily or every other day for best results.

Storage & Shelf Life

  • Store in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and heat
  • Keep container tightly sealed when not in use
  • Add at cool-down in formulation to preserve heat-sensitive phytochemicals
  • Refer to the COA/TDS for confirmed shelf life data
  • Once incorporated into a formula, use within the shelf life of your finished product

Safety & Handling

  • For external use only — not for internal consumption
  • Avoid contact with eyes; if contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water
  • Conduct a patch test before use in finished formulations
  • Keep out of reach of children
  • Refer to the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for full handling and safety information: SDS

Suggested Usage & Formulation

Suggested Use

Add Rosemary Clear Liquid Extract to the water phase or at cool-down (below 40°C) at 1–10%. For most serums, scalp treatments, and moisturizers, 2–5% is the typical effective range. Avoid prolonged exposure to high heat to preserve heat-sensitive phytochemicals such as rosmarinic acid and carnosic acid. Use a broad-spectrum preservative system in all water-containing formulations.

Storage

Store tightly closed in a cool, dark place away from heat and direct light. Refer to your supplier's CoA for confirmed shelf life.
