Description

L-Ascorbic Acid Powder (Pure Vitamin C)

Professional cosmetic ingredient — not a finished product.

L-Ascorbic Acid is the gold standard of Vitamin C in cosmetic formulation — the pure, biologically active form that your skin recognizes and uses directly. No conversion required, no efficacy lost in translation. At the right concentration and pH, it is the most potent brightening, antioxidant, and collagen-stimulating active available to formulators. The challenge isn’t whether it works — it’s formulating it correctly so it stays stable long enough to deliver results.

This is the ingredient behind the most clinically studied Vitamin C serums in dermatology. If you want maximum potency and are prepared to formulate with precision, L-Ascorbic Acid is unmatched.

What Is L-Ascorbic Acid?

L-Ascorbic Acid (LAA) is the naturally occurring, biologically active form of Vitamin C. Unlike Vitamin C derivatives such as 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid or Ascorbyl Glucoside, L-Ascorbic Acid does not require enzymatic conversion — it is immediately active in the skin. This makes it the most potent and fastest-acting form, but also the most demanding to formulate: it oxidizes rapidly when exposed to air, light, water, and trace metals, turning yellow then brown as it degrades.

Successful L-Ascorbic Acid formulation requires strict pH control (below 3.5), chelation, antioxidant synergists, and protective packaging. When done correctly, the results are clinically significant and unmatched by any derivative.

Key Specs

INCI Ascorbic Acid
CAS No. 50-81-7
Appearance White to off-white crystalline powder
Solubility Freely water-soluble; dissolves readily in the water phase
Typical Usage Rate 5–20% (clinical range); 10–15% most common for brightening serums
pH Requirement Below 3.5 for optimal stability and skin penetration; pH 2.5–3.5 ideal
Processing Add at cool-down (<40°C); avoid heat and alkaline conditions
Stability Oxidation-sensitive; requires chelator + antioxidant synergist + protective packaging
Grade Cosmetic grade; vegan-friendly

Key Benefits

  • Maximum brightening potency — directly inhibits tyrosinase and reduces melanin synthesis; the most clinically studied form for hyperpigmentation, PIH, and melasma
  • Collagen synthesis — essential cofactor for prolyl and lysyl hydroxylase enzymes required for collagen cross-linking; measurably improves skin firmness and reduces fine lines with consistent use
  • Antioxidant protection — neutralizes free radicals and reactive oxygen species; protects against UV-induced oxidative damage and photoaging when used alongside SPF
  • Immediate bioavailability — no enzymatic conversion required; active in skin immediately upon absorption, unlike derivatives that must be converted first
  • Wound healing & repair — supports keratinocyte migration and re-epithelialization; reduces post-inflammatory erythema and accelerates skin recovery
  • Synergistic with Vitamin E & Ferulic Acid — the classic CE+Ferulic combination multiplies antioxidant efficacy and significantly improves LAA stability

How to Formulate With It

L-Ascorbic Acid is an intermediate-to-advanced ingredient. The formulation requirements are strict but manageable with the right approach.

  1. Chelate first: Add 0.1% Sodium Phytate or 0.1–0.2% Disodium EDTA to your water phase before anything else. Metal ions are the primary driver of LAA oxidation — this step is non-negotiable.
  2. Add at cool-down: Dissolve L-Ascorbic Acid in your water phase at cool-down (below 40°C). It dissolves readily — no heat required. Avoid prolonged exposure to heat at any stage.
  3. pH adjustment: Adjust finished product pH to 2.5–3.5 using citric acid solution. This is critical — above pH 3.5, stability drops sharply and skin penetration decreases significantly. Use a calibrated pH meter.
  4. Add antioxidant synergists: Include 0.5% Vitamin E (Tocopherol) and/or 0.1% Ferulic Acid. These dramatically extend stability and boost antioxidant efficacy — the CE+Ferulic combination is the most studied antioxidant system in cosmetic science.
  5. Packaging: Use opaque, airless, or nitrogen-flushed packaging. Light and air are the enemy. Amber glass or opaque airless pumps are ideal.
  6. Preservation: Use a preservative effective at very low pH (e.g., phenoxyethanol-based systems). Verify efficacy at your target pH.

Beginner note: If the strict pH and stability requirements feel daunting, consider starting with 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid — it works at a more forgiving pH (4.0–6.0) and is significantly more stable, making it ideal for your first Vitamin C formula. Return to L-Ascorbic Acid when you’re ready for maximum potency.

Applications

  • High-potency brightening serums (10–15% LAA)
  • Anti-aging antioxidant serums targeting collagen support and photoaging
  • CE+Ferulic formulas (Vitamin C + Vitamin E + Ferulic Acid)
  • Post-procedure recovery serums
  • Spot treatments for PIH and melasma

Pairings & Suggested Formulas

  • Sodium Phytate — always pair with Sodium Phytate at 0.1% as your chelator; the single most important stability step for any LAA formula
  • Vitamin E — add Vitamin E Oil or Vitamin E Powder at 0.5–1% for the classic CE combination; regenerates oxidized Vitamin C and extends formula stability
  • Ferulic Acid — combine with Ferulic Acid Powder at 0.1% to complete the CE+Ferulic system; doubles the photoprotective efficacy of Vitamins C and E
  • 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid — also available as 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid for formulators who prefer a stable, pH-friendly alternative
  • Niacinamide — note: combine with Niacinamide cautiously; at high temperatures, LAA and niacinamide can form nicotinic acid. Use at room temperature and keep concentrations moderate (<5% niacinamide)

Example CE+Ferulic formula: 15% L-Ascorbic Acid + 1% Vitamin E + 0.1% Ferulic Acid + 0.1% Sodium Phytate in a water/propanediol base, pH adjusted to 3.0–3.2 with citric acid, preserved with 0.8% phenoxyethanol. Add all actives at cool-down. Package in amber airless pump.

Storage & Safety

Store tightly sealed in a cool, dry place away from direct light and heat at 10–25°C. Shelf life: 24 months when properly stored. Oxidation will cause yellowing — discard if powder has yellowed significantly. For external use only in finished cosmetic formulations. Not for internal use. Consult SDS before use.

Suggested Usage & Formulation

Formulation Tips

  • Concentration: Typically used at concentrations of 0.5% to 20% in cosmetic formulations.
  • Solubility: L-Ascorbic Acid is water-soluble, making it easy to incorporate into aqueous formulations.
  • pH Level: For optimal stability and efficacy, formulations should have a pH level of 3.0 to 3.5.
  • Compatibility: It is compatible with a wide range of ingredients but should be formulated at a low pH to maintain stability.

Suggested Use and Storage

  • Application: Add L-Ascorbic Acid powder to the water phase of your formulation and mix until fully dissolved. Ensure the product is homogeneously mixed for consistent efficacy.
  • Product Types: Ideal for use in serums, essences, moisturizers, creams, masks, peels, and spot treatments. Suitable for all skin types.
  • Storage: Store L-Ascorbic Acid powder in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, at a temperature between 50°F to 77°F (10°C to 25°C). Keep the product in an airtight container to protect it from moisture and oxidation.
  • Shelf Life: Properly stored, L-Ascorbic Acid powder has a shelf life of up to 24 months. Always check for any changes in appearance or odor before use.
