I use this preservative im a number of formulas. The quality is very good. Haven’t had any spoilage. I would like to see the expiry date on the bottle or at least on the website though.

Description
Bakuchiol Oil 98% (Corylifolia Extract) — The Plant-Based Retinol Alternative
Bakuchiol is a meroterpene phenol extracted from the seeds of Psoralea corylifolia (Babchi plant). Despite being structurally unrelated to retinol, peer-reviewed clinical studies — including a landmark 2018 randomized controlled trial published in the British Journal of Dermatology — demonstrate that bakuchiol produces comparable improvements in fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, elasticity, and firmness to retinol, with significantly fewer side effects including less dryness, irritation, and photosensitivity.
At 98% purity in an oil form, this is a high-concentration active ready for direct incorporation into facial oils, serums, emulsions, and anhydrous formulations.
Key Benefits
- Clinically comparable to retinol — activates retinoid-like gene expression (upregulates types I, III, IV collagen; downregulates MMP-1) through a mechanism distinct from retinoic acid receptors, producing similar anti-aging outcomes
- Significantly lower irritation than retinol — suitable for sensitive, dry, and reactive skin types; no peeling, erythema, or TEWL disruption at standard usage rates
- Photostable — unlike retinol, bakuchiol is stable to light and can be used in daytime formulations; no mandatory nighttime-only restriction
- Antioxidant activity — neutralizes free radicals and reduces oxidative stress-driven skin aging
- Anti-inflammatory — inhibits 5-lipoxygenase and COX enzymes; suitable for acne-prone and post-inflammatory skin
- Oil-soluble — incorporates directly into oil phases, anhydrous serums, and emulsion oil phases without solubilizers
How to Use
- Incorporation: Add directly to the oil phase or cool-down phase (below 40°C / 104°F)
- Recommended Usage Rate: 0.5–2% in finished formulations (1% is the most studied and widely used concentration)
- Solubility: Oil-soluble; not water-soluble. Use in oil phase or with appropriate solubilizers for water-based systems
- pH: Not pH-dependent; stable across a wide pH range
- Daytime use: Photostable — suitable for AM and PM formulations, unlike retinol

Bakuchiol vs. Retinol — Key Differences
| Bakuchiol 98% | Retinol | |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanism | Retinoid-like gene expression via distinct pathway | RAR receptor activation via conversion to retinoic acid |
| Irritation | Low — suitable for sensitive skin | Moderate to high — purging, peeling common |
| Photostability | Stable — AM & PM use | Unstable — PM use only recommended |
| Pregnancy safety | Generally considered safer (consult physician) | Contraindicated during pregnancy |
| Typical usage rate | 0.5–2% | 0.025–1% |
Suggested Formulas & Pairings
Bakuchiol Oil 98% works synergistically with:
- Squalane — dilute directly in Olive Squalane Oil for a clean, minimalist 1% bakuchiol facial oil; squalane is an ideal carrier due to its skin-identical lipid profile and oxidative stability
- Niacinamide — combine with Niacinamide Vitamin B3 Powder in the water phase of an emulsion; niacinamide and bakuchiol are fully compatible and together address pigmentation, barrier function, and fine lines through complementary pathways
- Hyaluronic Acid — add Hyaluronic Acid Powder LMW to the water phase of an emulsion for a hydrating anti-aging serum base that counterbalances any dryness
- Preservative (for emulsions) — protect water-containing formulations with Euxyl PE 9010 at 0.8–1% or Germall Plus at 0.1–0.5%
Example formula: A 1% Bakuchiol facial oil — combine 1g Bakuchiol Oil 98% with 99g Olive Squalane. Add 0.5% Vitamin E (tocopherol) as antioxidant. Fill into amber dropper bottle. Suitable for AM and PM use. Apply 3–4 drops to cleansed skin.
All products sold are cosmetic grade. For external use only. Intended for cosmetic and personal care formulations. Not for use in drug or pharmaceutical products.
Suggested Usage & Formulation
Suggested Usage & Formulation
Add 0.5–2% Bakuchiol Oil 98% directly to your oil phase or cool-down phase (below 40°C). For a simple facial oil, combine 1g per 100g batch with Olive Squalane. Suitable for AM and PM use — photostable, no nighttime restriction required. Recommended for all skin types including sensitive. Begin at 0.5% and increase to 1–2% as tolerated.
