I use this preservative im a number of formulas. The quality is very good. Haven’t had any spoilage. I would like to see the expiry date on the bottle or at least on the website though.

Description
Description
Ferulic acid powder (INCI: Ferulic Acid | CAS: 1135-24-6) is a hydroxycinnamic acid — a naturally occurring phenolic antioxidant found in the cell walls of plants such as rice bran, wheat germ, and oats. In skincare formulation, it is prized for two things: its own potent free radical scavenging activity, and its remarkable ability to stabilize and amplify the antioxidant performance of vitamins C (L-ascorbic acid) and E (tocopherol). Studies show that combining ferulic acid with vitamins C and E can more than double their photoprotective efficacy — making it a cornerstone ingredient in advanced antioxidant serums.
Its mechanism works at the cellular level: ferulic acid neutralizes reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by UV exposure, pollution, and metabolic stress — the same free radicals that break down collagen, cause hyperpigmentation, and accelerate visible aging. It also has mild anti-inflammatory properties, helping to calm redness and reduce irritation, making it suitable for sensitive and all skin types.
How to dissolve and disperse:
Ferulic acid powder has limited water solubility and is best dissolved using one of the following approaches:
- Ethanol (alcohol) — most effective solvent; dissolve at 0.5%–1% in ethanol before adding to the water phase
- Propylene glycol (PG) or butylene glycol — heat gently to 40–50°C to aid dissolution; suitable for alcohol-free formulas
- Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) — highly effective but use with caution; not suitable for all formulations
- Alkaline pre-dissolution — dissolve in a small amount of sodium hydroxide solution, then neutralize; used in some professional formulations
Avoid adding undissolved powder directly to water — it will clump and result in an uneven, unstable formula. Always pre-dissolve before incorporating into the main batch.
Formulation notes: Use at 0.5%–1% for optimal antioxidant activity. Optimal pH: 2.5–3.5 — ferulic acid is most stable and effective at low pH, which also aligns with the optimal range for vitamin C serums. Pairs exceptionally well with L-ascorbic acid (10%–20%) and tocopherol (0.5%–1%) for a synergistic antioxidant complex. Also compatible with niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and resveratrol. Suitable for all skin types. Store in a cool, dark environment — ferulic acid is sensitive to light and heat oxidation.
Suggested Usage & Formulation
Suggested Usage & Formulation
INCI Nomenclature: Ferulic Acid
Appearance: Off white to Yellowish Powder
Solubility: Soluble in Propanediol, Propylene Glycol, Ethoxydiglycol (EDG), Dimethyl Isosorbide (DMI), ethanol, dispersible in hot water (produces a milky yellow, rather than clear solution)
Suggested Use Levels: 0.5-1%
Storage: Protected from direct light and humidity
Shelf life: 24 months, properly stored in a sealed container.
Common Uses: Facial serums, creams, lotions, sunscreen, exfoliant liquids, and scrubs. We recommend adding this ingredient during the heated water phase of a formulation or added at the end as a solution in one of the recommended solvents.
Don't Use With: Exfoliating acids like glycolic, lactic, and salicylic acids because they can alter the pH, which then changes the effectiveness of the antioxidant.
This product should be added to a formulation at the recommended usage rate.
