Description

What Is Green Tea Clear Liquid Extract?

Green Tea Clear Liquid Extract (Camellia sinensis) is a water-soluble botanical active delivering the polyphenolic catechin profile of Camellia sinensis — led by Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG), alongside Epicatechin (EC), Epigallocatechin (EGC), and Epicatechin Gallate (ECG) — in a crystal-clear, ready-to-use liquid format for direct incorporation into the water phase of serums, toners, essences, moisturizers, and scalp treatments. INCI: Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract.

For those new to botanical actives, Green Tea is one of the most thoroughly researched antioxidant botanicals in cosmetic science — both topically and systemically. Its primary active, EGCG (Epigallocatechin Gallate), is a catechin polyphenol with an exceptionally high antioxidant capacity, studied for its ability to neutralise free radicals, reduce UV-induced oxidative damage, suppress inflammation, regulate sebum, and inhibit tyrosinase for brightening — all from a single botanical source. The clear liquid format means it incorporates into transparent formulations without any colour contribution, making it ideal for toners, gel serums, clear essences, and any formulation where visual clarity is important.

At the expert level, Green Tea’s catechins — particularly EGCG — operate through several validated mechanisms. EGCG is a potent scavenger of reactive oxygen species (ROS) including superoxide anion, hydroxyl radical, and singlet oxygen, with an ORAC value significantly higher than most botanical antioxidants. It inhibits NF-κB transcription factor activation, downregulating COX-2, IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α to produce measurable anti-inflammatory effects in skin. EGCG inhibits 5α-reductase (reducing DHT-driven sebaceous gland activity) and regulates AMPK/mTOR-mediated sebocyte lipogenesis, making it one of the most mechanistically grounded actives for oily and acne-prone skin. It also inhibits tyrosinase activity and suppresses MITF (microphthalmia-associated transcription factor) expression, reducing melanin synthesis for brightening activity. Photoprotective effects operate through the inhibition of UV-induced AP-1 transcription, reducing matrix metalloproteinase (MMP-1, MMP-3) expression and collagen degradation from UV exposure. In scalp formulations, EGCG has been studied for its role in extending the anagen phase of the hair follicle cycle and protecting follicles from DHT-mediated miniaturisation.

Key Benefits

  • Elite Antioxidant Protection — EGCG and catechins scavenge ROS (superoxide, hydroxyl radical, singlet oxygen) with one of the highest antioxidant capacities of any botanical active; reduces oxidative stress-driven skin aging
  • Potent Anti-Inflammatory — Inhibits NF-κB activation, downregulating COX-2, IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α; calms redness, irritation, and inflammatory acne in reactive skin
  • Photoprotective — Inhibits UV-induced AP-1 transcription and MMP-1/MMP-3 upregulation; supports skin recovery post-sun exposure and complements SPF formulations
  • Sebum Regulation — Inhibits 5α-reductase and AMPK/mTOR sebocyte lipogenesis; one of the most mechanistically substantiated actives for oily and acne-prone skin
  • Tyrosinase Inhibition & Brightening — Suppresses tyrosinase activity and MITF expression; reduces melanin synthesis for a more even, radiant complexion
  • Crystal Clear Format — No colour impact on finished formulation; ideal for transparent serums, toners, gel textures, and clear scalp treatments

Applications

  • Antioxidant defence and pollution-shield serums
  • Oily and acne-prone skin sebum-regulating toners and essences
  • Brightening and tone-evening formulations
  • After-sun and photoprotective support treatments
  • Scalp serums and hair follicle health treatments
  • Anti-aging free radical protection moisturizers

💡 Which Green Tea format is right for you? We offer three Camellia sinensis formats:
• This Clear Liquid Extract — Crystal-clear; ideal for transparent formulations (toners, gel serums, clear essences) where colour is critical
• Green Tea Brown Liquid Extract — More concentrated botanical profile; suited to opaque creams, moisturizers, and formulations where colour is not a constraint
• Green Tea Extract Powder (10:1) — Concentrated dry powder for precise catechin dosing; best for anhydrous formulations or when maximum concentration control is needed

How to Formulate With Green Tea Clear Liquid Extract

Beginner tip: Add directly to your water phase or at cool-down (≤40°C). No pre-processing required — it incorporates effortlessly. Start at 3–5% in an antioxidant serum or oily-skin toner. Pair with Niacinamide for a sebum-regulating + brightening duo that covers two of the most requested skin concerns. EGCG is pH-sensitive — work in a slightly acidic to neutral range (pH 4.5–6.5) for best stability.

Expert notes:

  • Phase: Water phase or cool-down (≤40°C); EGCG and catechins degrade with prolonged heat — cool-down addition strongly recommended
  • Usage Rate: 1–10%; 2–5% for most leave-on applications; up to 10% for intensive antioxidant or sebum-regulating treatments
  • pH: Best at pH 4.5–6.5; catechins are more stable in slightly acidic conditions; alkaline pH accelerates oxidative degradation
  • Oxidation management: Catechins are susceptible to oxidative browning — combine with antioxidant co-actives (Vitamin C derivatives, Resveratrol) and minimise air exposure during formulation; airless packaging recommended
  • Synergies: Outstanding with Niacinamide (complementary sebum regulation + brightening, barrier amplification), Resveratrol (polyphenol antioxidant layering — EGCG + stilbene for dual-mechanism free radical defence), Bearberry Extract (tyrosinase inhibition stacking for enhanced brightening), Hyaluronic Acid LMW (adds hydration to antioxidant treatment), and Beta Glucan (immunomodulatory + anti-inflammatory amplification)
  • Preservation: Always include a broad-spectrum preservative in aqueous formulas — we recommend Geogard ECT at 0.5–1.0%

Pairings — Build a Better Formula

  • Niacinamide Vitamin B3 Powder — The natural pairing: complementary sebum regulation (5α-reductase inhibition + niacinamide’s sebaceous gland modulation) and synergistic tyrosinase inhibition for brightening — one of the most effective oily/acne-prone skin duos in water-phase formulation
  • Resveratrol Powder — Stilbene polyphenol antioxidant that stacks with EGCG for dual-mechanism free radical defence: catechin ROS scavenging + resveratrol sirtuin activation and NF-κB suppression
  • Bearberry Clear Liquid Extract — Arbutin-rich tyrosinase inhibitor that amplifies Green Tea’s brightening activity for a comprehensive multi-mechanism pigmentation treatment
  • Coenzyme Q10 Powder 98% — Mitochondrial antioxidant that complements EGCG’s extracellular ROS scavenging with intracellular oxidative protection for comprehensive anti-aging antioxidant coverage
  • 80% Beta Glucan Powder — Immunomodulatory polysaccharide that amplifies Green Tea’s anti-inflammatory activity and adds barrier-protective film-forming for an elite sensitive + oily skin serum
  • Hyaluronic Acid Powder LMW — Adds targeted hydration to antioxidant and sebum-regulating formulations without interfering with catechin activity
