Salicylic Acid Exfoliant Powder

Salicylic acid powder (INCI: Salicylic Acid | CAS: 69-72-7) is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) and one of the most well-researched exfoliating actives in cosmetic formulation. Unlike alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) which are water-soluble, salicylic acid is lipophilic — meaning it is oil-soluble and can penetrate into the sebaceous follicle, dissolving the plug of dead skin cells and excess sebum that causes blackheads, whiteheads, and acne breakouts. This makes it uniquely effective for oily, acne-prone, and congested skin types.

Its primary mechanism is keratolysis — the loosening and shedding of the bonds between corneocytes (dead skin cells) in the stratum corneum. This promotes smoother skin texture, reduces the appearance of enlarged pores, and helps prevent future breakouts by keeping follicles clear. It also has mild anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which help calm active blemishes while preventing new ones from forming.

How to dissolve and disperse:
Salicylic acid powder is not water-soluble — it must be dissolved in a suitable solvent before incorporation. Recommended solvents include:

• Ethanol (alcohol) — most effective; dissolve at 1%–2% in ethanol before adding to formula
• Propylene glycol (PG) — works well at low concentrations; heat gently to aid dissolution
• Dipropylene glycol (DPG) or butylene glycol — suitable alternatives for alcohol-free formulas
• Polysorbate 20 or 80 — can be used as a solubilizer in water-based systems at low usage levels

Avoid adding undissolved powder directly to water — it will not disperse evenly and will result in an unstable formula. Always pre-dissolve before incorporating into the main batch.

Formulation notes: Use at 0.5%–2% for leave-on products; up to 3% for rinse-off. Optimal pH: 3.0–4.0 — salicylic acid is most effective below pH 4.0 where it remains in its free acid form. Pairs well with niacinamide, zinc PCA, azelaic acid, and tea tree extract. Suitable for oily, combination, and acne-prone skin. Use with caution in leave-on products for sensitive or compromised skin — patch test recommended.
