Formulation Guide

Formulation Guide: Stabilized Radiance Serum

A professionally structured gel-serum. This formula utilizes a chelating agent to ensure long-term stability of the Vitamin C and a gum network for a luxury, non-drip application.

Difficulty: Intermediate | Yield: 100g

The Formula:

Phase Ingredient % (Percentage) Weight (Grams)
A Distilled Water qs to 100% 88.9g
A Disodium EDTA (Chelator) 0.2% 0.2g
B Propanediol 1,3 (or Glycerin) 5.0% 5.0g
B Xanthan Gum (Soft/Clear) 0.4% 0.4g
C 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid 5.0% 5.0g
D Broad Spectrum Preservative 0.5% 0.5g
D Citric Acid (50% Solution) qs pH Adjust

Chemist's Procedure:

  1. Prepare Phase A: Add Disodium EDTA to the Distilled Water and stir until completely dissolved and crystal clear.1 This step is critical for neutralizing metal ions that cause oxidation.

  2. Prepare Phase B (The Slurry): In a separate small beaker, disperse the Xanthan Gum into the Propanediol. Mix well to create a slurry. This prevents "fish eyes" or clumping.

  3. Hydrate: Pour Phase B (Slurry) into Phase A (Water). Stir with moderate shear until the gum is fully hydrated and the solution thickens into a gel.

  4. Add Active (Phase C): Add the 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid to the gel. Stir gently to avoid creating excessive air bubbles until fully dissolved.

  5. Preserve (Phase D): Add your preservative.

  6. pH Adjustment: Check the pH. Adjust to pH 4.0–4.5 using Citric Acid solution if necessary. This range ensures the stability of the active and the efficacy of the preservative.

  7. Add in cool-down to reduce degradation
  8. Use chelator + antioxidants for stability
  9. Avoid alkaline pH and long heat

Applications

  • Serums
  • Lotions
  • Essences

Troubleshooting

  • Clumping or poor dispersion? Pre-disperse in glycerin or mix under higher shear.
  • Stability concerns? Use chelators/antioxidants and respect pH/temperature limits.
  • Texture too thick/thin? Adjust gums, electrolytes, or solvent ratios.

Storage & Safety

Store tightly closed in a cool, dry place away from light and heat. For external use only. Patch test finished products before regular use.
