Description

Malic Acid — The Gentle AHA for Exfoliation, Texture & pH Control

Not all AHAs are created equal. Malic Acid is a naturally occurring alpha hydroxy acid found in apples and other fruits — and it’s one of the mildest, most versatile AHAs available to formulators. Where glycolic acid can be aggressive and lactic acid can sensitize, Malic Acid delivers effective exfoliation, improved skin texture, and a brighter complexion with a gentler touch. It also doubles as a reliable pH adjuster, making it a dual-function workhorse in toners, serums, peels, and brightening formulas.

Who Is This For?

  • DIY formulators building exfoliating toners, serums, or chemical peels
  • Skincare brands targeting skin texture, dullness, or uneven tone with a gentle AHA
  • Formulators working with sensitive or reactive skin types who need a milder alternative to glycolic or lactic acid
  • Anyone who needs a precise, cosmetic-grade pH adjuster for formula stability

Key Benefits

  • Gently exfoliates dead skin cells to reveal smoother, brighter skin
  • Improves skin texture and radiance with regular use
  • Supports a more even-looking skin tone — complements brightening actives
  • Milder than glycolic or lactic acid — suitable for sensitive skin and frequent-use formulas
  • Dual-function: exfoliant and pH adjuster in one ingredient
  • Naturally derived from fruit — apple-sourced AHA

How Malic Acid Compares to Other AHAs

AHA Molecular Weight Strength Best For
Glycolic Acid 76 Da (smallest) Strongest Aggressive resurfacing, oily/thick skin
Lactic Acid 90 Da Moderate Hydrating exfoliation, normal skin
Malic Acid (This Product) 134 Da Gentle Sensitive skin, frequent use, pH adjustment
Mandelic Acid 152 Da Gentlest Acne-prone, very sensitive skin

Malic Acid is also frequently used as a co-AHA — blended with glycolic or lactic acid to moderate their intensity while extending exfoliation benefits.

Formulation Details

INCI Name Malic Acid
Source Naturally derived (fruit-based)
Appearance White crystalline powder
Solubility Water soluble
Recommended Usage (exfoliant) 1.0 – 10%
Recommended Usage (pH adjuster) q.s. to target pH
Working pH 3.0 – 4.5 for exfoliation; up to 6.0 for pH adjustment
Incorporation Water phase, room temperature

Formulator Tips

  • For exfoliation, keep pH between 3.0–4.5 — AHAs lose efficacy above pH 4.5
  • Use as a pH adjuster at any level — dissolve in water and add dropwise to reach target pH
  • Blend with glycolic or lactic acid at a 1:1 ratio to create a gentler multi-AHA exfoliant
  • Always include a broad-spectrum SPF recommendation in finished products containing AHAs — exfoliation increases UV sensitivity
  • Patch test recommended for sensitive skin formulas before full use

Full Clinical Exfoliating Toner Formula (100%)

Sodium Hydroxide (10% solution) q.s. Adjust to pH 3.5–4.0 for active exfoliation

Target pH: 3.5–4.0 | Texture: Lightweight liquid toner

Formulation Notes

  • Dissolve Malic Acid fully in the water phase before adjusting pH
  • Add Niacinamide and Alpha-Arbutin directly to Phase A — both are water-soluble and heat-stable
  • Add D-Panthenol and Allantoin in cool-down to preserve their soothing activity
  • Always adjust pH last, after all actives are incorporated
  • AHA efficacy drops significantly above pH 4.5 — verify with a calibrated pH meter
  • Include SPF guidance on finished product labeling — AHAs increase photosensitivity

Best Ingredient Pairings

Sold as a cosmetic raw material for professional formulation use. Not intended for direct skin application. Always conduct safety and stability testing before commercializing finished products. Finished products containing AHAs should include SPF usage guidance.
