Dimethicone 500 (Cosmetic Grade Silicone Fluid)

Dimethicone 500 is a silky, protective silicone oil that makes skincare and haircare feel smoother, softer, and more luxurious.

Think of it as a “slip + shield” ingredient:

• Slip: makes products glide on easily and feel less sticky or greasy

• Shield: forms a light, breathable barrier that helps reduce moisture loss and protects hair/skin from dryness

Dimethicone 500 is thicker than Dimethicone 350, so it gives a more cushiony, silky, longer-lasting feel—especially in creams, lotions, hair serums, and anti-frizz products.

How to Use (step-by-step)

Step 1 — Know where it goes

Dimethicone is oil-soluble (not water-soluble), so it goes in your oil phase.

Step 2 — Add it correctly

Option A (most common): Add to the oil phase

1. Weigh your Dimethicone 500.

2. Add it to your oils/butters/emulsifier in the oil phase.

3. Heat and process as normal.

Option B: Add in cool-down (for texture control)

• If you want to fine-tune feel (or avoid long heating), you can add it during cool-down once the batch is below ~40–45°C and mix very well.

How much do I use?

Recommended use level (in finished product)

0.5% – 10% (typical 1% – 5%)

“How much in 100g?” (super simple)

• 1% = 1g in 100g

• 3% = 3g in 100g

• 5% = 5g in 100g

Pro Tips

• If your formula feels too slippery, reduce the % (Dimethicone 500 is stronger-feeling than lighter silicones).

• Great for anti-frizz: start at 1–2% in leave-ins and serums.

• If you want a lighter feel, blend it with lighter esters/oils (Dimethicone 500 is intentionally richer).
