How to Get Rid of Keratosis Pilaris: Formulating a 10% Glycolic Acid Body Butter Cream

How to Get Rid of Keratosis Pilaris: Formulating a 10% Glycolic Acid Body Butter Cream

What Is Keratosis Pilaris?

Keratosis pilaris (KP) is a common, harmless skin condition that causes small, rough bumps — often on the upper arms, thighs, cheeks, or buttocks. It occurs when keratin (a skin protein) builds up and plugs hair follicles, creating that characteristic "chicken skin" texture. KP affects up to 40% of adults and is especially common in people with dry skin or eczema.

While there's no permanent cure, consistent use of chemical exfoliants — particularly glycolic acid — can dramatically smooth and soften KP-prone skin.

Why Glycolic Acid Works for KP

Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) with the smallest molecular weight of all AHAs, allowing it to penetrate deeply into the skin. It works by:

  • Breaking down the bonds between dead skin cells (corneodesmosomes)
  • Dissolving the excess keratin plugging hair follicles
  • Accelerating cell turnover to reveal smoother skin underneath
  • Improving skin hydration over time by stimulating glycosaminoglycan production

At 10%, glycolic acid is effective for KP without being overly aggressive — making it ideal for a leave-on body butter formulation.

Laboratory Protocol

Step 1 – Prep & Heat

Weigh your Phase A ingredients — using exactly 45.0g of distilled water for now — into one heat-safe beaker. Weigh all Phase B ingredients into a second beaker. Heat both in a water bath to 70°C – 75°C.

Step 2 – Emulsify

Pour Phase B into Phase A and blend with a high-shear mixer (stick blender) until a smooth, uniform emulsion forms. Continue mixing as the batch cools.

Step 3 – Cool Down (Phase C)

Allow the emulsion to cool below 40°C. Stir in your Phase C ingredients: D-Panthenol, Liquid Germall Plus, and fragrance (if using). Mix gently but thoroughly.

Step 4 – pH Titration (Phase D)

Place your beaker on your scale and tare (zero) it. Begin adding your 18% Sodium Hydroxide solution drop by drop, stirring thoroughly after each addition. Check the pH continuously until it reaches your target of 3.5 – 4.0. Do not rush this step — the amount of NaOH needed will vary batch to batch.

Step 5 – Final q.s. Top-Up (Phase D)

Once your pH is confirmed, check the total weight of your batch on the scale. Add plain Distilled Water until the scale reads exactly 100.0g. Give it one final, thorough mix and do a last pH check.

💡 Why this works: By topping up the water at the very end, you account for exactly how much NaOH you needed — ensuring your body butter always yields exactly 100g and your glycolic acid remains a true, undiluted 10%.

Step 6 – Fill & Label

Transfer to clean, sanitized jars or pump bottles. Label with: product name, full INCI ingredient list, batch number, date of manufacture, and usage instructions.

How to Use

  • Apply a small amount to affected areas (arms, thighs, etc.) 2–3x per week to start.
  • Increase frequency gradually as skin tolerates.
  • Avoid use on broken, irritated, or sunburned skin.
  • Always follow with SPF on exposed areas during the day — AHAs increase photosensitivity.
  • Patch test before first use.

Expected Results

With consistent use (2–3x per week), most users notice:

  • Week 2–3: Reduced roughness and bump texture
  • Week 4–6: Noticeably smoother skin, less redness
  • Week 8–12: Significant improvement in KP appearance

Results vary by individual. Consistency is key — KP is a chronic condition that requires ongoing maintenance.
